Watering a roadside lawn

sod being irrigated

Perhaps the most important practice for successfully establishing a new lawn is proper watering. For sod, watering should begin immediately and be done at a rate and frequency that keeps the sod and soil moist but not saturated; this should continue until the sod has formed roots and is firmly in place. Seedings require light, frequent irrigation. During the first couple of weeks after seeding, a light watering 2 to 3 times per day should be sufficient (if hot and dry weather occurs, additional watering events will be necessary to maintain a moist soil surface). Starting in about the third week, about ⅓ inch of water should be applied every other day. After mowing has begun, watering can be reduced and once fully established, very little irrigation should be needed. The video below discusses irrigation further.
